Patent Index 2022 published by the EPO today

How has the European patent environment developed in 2022? Insights are provided by the latest release of the yearly Patent Index by the EPO.

The European Patent Office has published its patent index for the year 2022 today.

Despite the pandemic situation that was still ongoing in 2022, the number of EP filings increased by about 2.5%. Particularly in the technical fields of digital communication, electrical machinery/energy (in particular batteries) and biotechnology growth rates in the range of about 11-18 % could be observed.

The biggest share (24.9%) of European filings in 2022 again originates from US applicants. Within the EPC member states, German applicants are still the most eager filers (12.8%). However, compared to 2021, the percentage of EP patent applications having German origin decreased by about 4.7%.

The decline was compensated by Chinese and Korean applicants, where growth rates were +15.1% and +10%, respectively. Notably, three of the Top 4 Applicants (Huawei, LG and Samsung) have their headquarter in these fast-growing countries.
